XARELTO
WHAT IS IT?
Xarelto is one of the newest members of the new wave of blood thinners entering the market to replace the traditional blood-thinning drug warfarin (Coumadin). Approved in 2011, Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary. The drug has enjoyed immense profitability, bringing in about $2 billion in sales in 2015, and the numbers in 2016 so far show increased sales. The Xarelto lawsuit alleges that Janseen failed to take the appropriate steps to protect Xarelto users from serious, life-threatening bleeding events
However, Xarelto has been linked to serious complications, including uncontrollable bleeding, pulmonary embolism, and stroke. Lawsuits have been filed alleging that Bayer and Johnson & Johnson both knew and concealed information regarding the risks associated with Xarelto. As a result, hundreds of patients have died due to the bleeding caused by the drug.
HOW IT WORKS
Xarelto was marketed as a new type of blood-thinner that would be more convenient and less restrictive than the traditional blood-thinning medications (warfarin). Patients that took warfarin needed routine blood tests and frequent physician monitoring of their dosage, as well as dietary restrictions. However, Xarelto offered a uniform dosage, no routine blood testing, and less dietary restrictions, making it more appealing to patients.
However, the major difference between Xarelto and warfarin is that there is no antidote available to reverse bleeding in the event of an emergency involving a patient taking Xarelto. If the patient is taking warfarin, Vitamin K can be administered to counter its effects.
LAWSUITS INVOLVING XARELTO CLAIMS
According to numerous lawsuits filed against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, hundreds of patient deaths and serious injuries have been linked to Xarelto. Xarelto was at the top of list of most dangerous blood-thinners according to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP).
